The “gently structured,” personalized approach builds on residents’ preferences and strengths and enables them to feel successful each day.
"After comparing six assisted living communities with my mother, what sold me on The Greens was the excellence of the staff. The dementia care coordinator had been there for 13 years, and her eyes would literally tear up when talking about a resident. That was the kind of commitment we were looking for.”
Considered one of the best programs of its kind, Evergreen has been recognized with numerous awards for providing residents a comfortable, secure environment where each resident’s attributes are respected and nurtured. The program fosters a stimulating atmosphere of independence, routine, structure and “cueing,” all strategically aimed at improving the task performance of cognitively impaired residents.
Daily staples include physical exercise, musical entertainment and interactive “brain games” played on a Smart Board. Expressive activities such as art therapy, encompassing painting to ceramics, are all designed to engage the entire person. And when residents are not participating in Evergreen activities, the greenhouse and the enclosed, landscaped courtyard exemplify all the wonderful places to relax and enjoy the day.
One activity that has reached even those with significant memory loss is “Reflections on Art.” Led by a specially trained consultant, the program uses famous paintings mounted on large boards to stimulate memories and the sharing of stories. Explanations by the facilitator help residents recall early experiences and connect with feelings that have been buried in memory loss.
The high staff-to-resident ratio of 1 to 5 includes a full-time nurse, and all members of the staff have been specially trained, earning certification in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Dementia Training Program. Their skills enable them to cater to a wide spectrum of dementia, from the mildly impaired resident to those who respond better to approaches such as sensory exercises and aromatherapy.
For the convenience of families, the all-inclusive cost of the Evergreen program covers three meals daily (including a Sunday brunch to which families are invited), snacks, assistance with activities of daily living (bathing, showering, incontinence management, dressing, grooming and medication management), housecleaning, personal laundry service, utilities, cable service and a morning newspaper. The weekly schedule includes a Sunday afternoon music program that for many families is an ideal time to visit.
